Since leaving Iran for France some thirty years ago, painting has been a way for Mansour Vakili to maintain a link to his homeland. In search of the essence of Persian calligraphy, a strong component of Persian culture, Vakili’s method borrows from his background as a trained architect. Looked at with perspective, his works appear to separate from their frame, as if transformed into spoken energy and musical vibrations. Vakili fuses tradition and modernity, as attested by the feelings of familiarity and unknown-ness his paintings evoke. In so doing, he re-discovers universal memories.
