Elmira Roozbeh explores childhood with passion and harshness. Her depictions of over-sized teddy bears are much more than simple replicas of fuzzy companions; they speak of a childhood so overbearing that it cannot be surpassed. Elmira addresses the arrested development of a generation of children thwarted by the misplaced exigencies of adults. Children themselves are rarely depicted, only the toys of a childhood frozen in time. Elmira’s perfect execution in drawing and painting, reminiscent of the efforts of the straight-A child, is itself a commentary on the absurdity of established standards of perfection.
